Fox terriers are a happy, lively breed. They definitely insist on being a major part of the family. They are always ready to be involved with what you are doing and where you are going. Bred to be independent thinkers, fox terriers are not the easiest to train. Positive training methods work best. If left alone a lot Fox Terriers will find ways to entertain themselves. They are not a hyper breed, but they are active. Funny loving, they can be mischevious, and it is important that you have a sense of humor.
Smooth Fox have medium length hair that lies smoothly on the body. It is a rather stiff hair and tends to stick to and embed in clothing and fabric furniture. These dogs do shed. Regular brushing is recommended. What is great about SFT coats is that even though they may get dirty or muddy, once the dirt dries, it just brushes off.
This breed stands high on its toe pads. It is important to trim the toenails regularly and often, otherwise the long nail will push the foot back on the main pad and will eventually cause a problem in the pasterns.
Fox Terriers are not Toy Fox Terriers nor are they Jack Russell Terriers (nor Parsons Russell Terriers)
